you can substituted it with:
1. Saffron stick,
2. a few drop Yellow colour.
3. But the best is Dry Mustard

yes, you can substitute curry or cumin. But, get a little can of turmeric... it isn't very expensive and will last you a LONG time (same with curry %26amp; cumin)......
Puff Pastries is 100% absolutely right....i make a tagine that calls for tumeric..and when i dont have it i use dry mustard....its for color mainly!!
